Haugar was Norway's second most important place for the election of kings. In memory of this a monument was raised here in 1954. Haugar can be assumed to be the "birthplace" of Tønsberg. It originated as a farm, which was separated from the Royal Court of Sæheimr. Today Haugar Art Museum is located at the site of the ancient court.
